Iraqi metal band Acrassicauda, now refugees in the United States

Acrassicauda, the Iraqi heavy metal band featured in the scary, stunning documentary “Heavy Metal in Baghdad,” landed a feature story in today’s New York Times.

“Heavy Metal in Baghdad” followed journalists from Vice, as they searched postwar Iraq for the band. Frankly, the film will scare the hell out of you: Iraq was disintegrating into anarchy at that point. From the footage, you can feel the danger in the streets.

Now, the band members are in the United States. In that respect, they’re “win the lottery” lucky: According to the NYT story, only 13,000 of the approximately 2 million refugees from Iraq were admitted to the U.S. last year.

Anyway, cheers for Vice, who advocated (and paid) to support the band during their time as refugees, and kudos to the NYT for the story.
